Summer is coming, and after a wet winter it’s a great excuse to get away for a long weekend and enjoy our beautiful country. There are so many places to go for a quick break in New Zealand. Rotorua is a great choice as there is something for everyone. Rotorua is close to Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Taupo and Whakatane so is a great place to base yourself and do some great day trips also. 1. Rotorua Canopy Tours
Rotorua Canopy Tours is 3-hour eco adventure, ziplining will be your mode of transport as you explore stunning native forest on this fully guided tour. Groups are small, 10 max with two guides. If you think you are too old, you’re not! This tour is suitable for all ages 6 years and up, the oldest so far was 93!
2. Mountain biking in the Redwood Forest
The Redwood Forest has some of the best mountain biking tracks in New Zealand. This forest is full of Californian Redwood trees. The forest has mountain biking tracks suitable for all levels, from beginner and kids trails right through to the most experienced riders. If you come to town without a bike, don’t worry head to Mountain Bike Rotorua and hire one for half or a whole day of fun!
3. Day trip to Mount Maunganui
Mount Maunganui town is one-hour drive from Rotorua. Mount Maunganui, or ‘The Mount’ as locals know it, is a small costal town with white sandy beaches. What makes this town so special is the mountain called Mauao, which is a large lava dome formed about two to three million years ago. The stunning walking tracks around and up Mauao have amazing views and can be conquered in under two hours.
4. Natural hot pools
Rotorua is well known for natural mineral hot springs. If you are looking for some relaxation or for relief from achy muscles, the Polynesian Spa has it all. With a mix of public and private pools that overlooks lake Rotorua, Polynesian spa has a pool for everyone. There are two sides to the spa, for a little extra head to the Deluxe Lake Spa side and enjoy fresh towels, free lockers and shampoo and conditioner in the showers after your soak.
5. OGO OGO is a laugh a minute!
Roll down a hill in a giant inflatable ball at the world’s largest ball rolling park. Enjoy a hot soak between your rolls in the hot tubs that look over the lake. You can enjoy this experience with 1 or 2 others in the same ball depending on the track you choose to roll. This park is not just for kids, get rolling – it’s a blast!
6. Rafting in Rotorua
If you are after a white knuckled thrill, the Kaituna grade 5 rafting trip is for you! River Rats Rafting is based at Rotorua airport, head there and get geared up and trained by qualified rafting guides before getting on the river.
