I was lucky enough to experience the small group tour by AATKings of the South Island. We got to stay at The Millbrook Resort in Queenstown, take the gondola to Bob's Peak for dinner and a Maori Show. Some of us even were brave enough to Luge!
The next day we took the Shotover Jet ride through the Shotover Canyon on the River of the same name. Then we drove down to Milford Sound driving along the shores of Lake Wakatipu to Te Anau.
Next stop, Fiordland National Park. What a beautiful place. We heard the stories of Pop's Lookout and Mirror Lakes. We got to explore the Chasm, which was breathtaking! But everytime I saw something so special I didn't think it could be topped, I saw something more special than the view before!
The overnight on the Milford Mariner was one of the most peaceful things I think I have ever done in my life. We headed out onto the Sound in the afternoon and cruised around looking at different waterfalls and trying to spot some wildlife. The beds were really comfy and the next morning, breakfast was great!
We went on the explorer to find sealions and dolphin and penguins and we got to see them all. The kayakers just paddled around the Sound making no noise at all! If you want to really get away from it all this is what you need to do!
We left the Sound in the morning and headed out to Stewart Island through Bluff (home of the famous Bluff Oysters) for some bird watching. We went to Ulva Island which is a predator-free island for viewing native birds and flora. We even went out at night to see Kiwi, which we did!!!!!
From here we went up to Mt. Cook for the evening and saw the highest mountain in New Zealand. On our last day of our tour we stopped to see Lakes Pukaki and Tekapo on our way to see the Church of the Good Shepherd and travel across the Canterbury Plains. We stayed at Terrace Down Golf Resort the night before our departure from the South Island and back home.
What a glorious trip! Our driver Daryl Kirk loves his country you can tell by how he discribes the areas as we pass through and his stories of the history can't be beat. If you want to see the best of the South Island in a small intimate group, the 8 day Southern Contrasts AAT Kings tour, is the tour for you.
