Staveley Sausage Rolls

Dating back to the 1880s, it’s a meeting place for locals and a magical place for visitors – not only because of the famous sausage Staveley Sausage Rolls.

The legendary Staveley Village Store is located in the heart of one of New Zealand’s tight-knit rural communities, where the culture is warm, the atmosphere is friendly and the pace is “just like life should be.”

Two generations of the Burgess family have raised families here and run the store; loyal locals and curious visitors find ladies’ coffee meetings here each Tuesday morning and daily stops by Lord of the Rings tours (picking up their homemade packed lunches).

One Radio Ashburton poll found the Staveley Store voted “The Best Coffee Made in the District.”

In summer it’s buzzing with backpackers and mountain bikers; in winter, the nearby Staveley Skating Rink hires out 80 sets of skates and keeps the store open to 11pm.

It’s worth a trip to Staveley from anywhere in the South Island, to visit this iconic village store – and perhaps New Zealand’s most famous sausage roll.
