1. Skiing and snowboarding:
Mt Ruapehu has New Zealand's largest skiable areas featuring Whakapapa and Turoa ski resorts. Both resorts offer a variety of terrain for all levels and Turoa features Australasia's longest vertical. There are several on-mountain events and races to check out during the winter months.
2. Tongariro National Park:
New Zealand's first national park contains features emerald lakes, mountains, rainforests, steam vents and waterfalls. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of New Zealand's best one day walks that feature beautiful scenery to explore.
3. Mountain biking:
Some of the best mountain biking trials are found in the Ruapehu region perfect for the mountain biking enthusiasts. Be sure to check out Old Coach Road, Fishers Track, 42 Traverse, and the Bridge to Nowhere.
Visit New Zealand's highest 18-hole golf course at the Waiouru Golf Course. With views of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe, the views of the course make it one of the best in New Zealand.
5. Whanganui National Park:
Go fishing, kayaking, jet boating and trekking to see the flora and fauna of the park and visit the famous "Bridge to Nowhere," which is a memorial bridge for WWII servicemen that tried settling in the area.
