Whatipu is a spectacular wild and untamed black sand beach.

South of Karekare, Whatipu is a spectacular area of remote and wild black sand beach, coastal dunes and wetlands. Located at the southern end of the Waitakere Ranges about 1hr drive from Auckland city, and 45 minute’s drive from Titirangi village. The beach is not as busy as the other west coast beaches, and is a scientific reserve owned by DOC and managed by ARC.

Whatipu offers beautiful costal trails which lead to the famous Whatipu Caves, which were once used as shelter by travellers and the largest of the caves was even found to be used as a dance hall. A trip to the Whatipu Caves is an outdoors adventure the whole family can enjoy! This beach offers camping grounds, picnic spots and fabulous bush trails for a stunning scenic our-doors experience.
