Hanmer Springs Hotness

Hanmer Springs is a 90 minute drive from Christchurch. Escape and relax in the alpine town and enjoy some of the top activities in Hanmer Springs.

  1. Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa: Enjoy the forest views when you sit and relax in one of the pools which range in temperature from 28-42 degrees Celsius.  There are a variety of different pools to choose from including private pools, family areas, rock pools and more.  The thermal pools and spa are a great activity no matter what the weather and is like.  Visit the pools after a day of skiing on the slopes, riding your bike on the alpine hills or if you want somewhere to hang out and socialise.
    • Tip: Don’t miss out on the SuperBowl slide for a bit of fun after a relaxing in the waters.   
  2. The Spa at Hanmer Springs: The ultimate in relaxation is getting a massage therapy treatment.  You can choose from facials, body treatments, body massages and several other options.  The Spa uses a range of Alpine Aqua products which utilise natural local ingredients.
    • Tip: A yummy treatment to try is the Chocolate Regenerative Care Facial to enrich your skin and leave it feeling smooth.  Don’t forget to call ahead and make a booking for a treatment since slots can get booked up quickly, especially on the weekends.
  3. Hiking and walking: There are several walking tracks and trails for different levels to experience the scenic alpine beauty.  The Heritage Forest Area covers over 5,150 hectares with a variety of trees and plants and has different walks under 1.5 hours.  For half-day and full day hikes there are tracks to Mt Isobel (which offers stunning panoramic views from the top), Conical Hill Walk, The Waterfall Track and several other trails to choose from.

  4. Golfing: Head out to the 18-hole golf course which is set amongst alpine scenery.  Golf games can be enjoyed all year round at the course.  You can also enjoy a round of mini golf or brush up your skills at the driving range.
    • Tip: You can hire equipment and carts at the Hanmer Springs Golf Club so you don’t have to worry about bringing your own clubs.
  5. Skiing and snowboarding: During the winter months, the Hanmer Springs Ski Area is a fun club field to go skiing and snowboarding.  There is varied terrain for all levels with something for beginners and experienced skiers and snowboarders.
    • Tip: The mountain has lower tow fees than a ski resort since it is a club field so it can be a more affordable option to ride the winter powder.
