Parau Track

This mixed gradient tramp covers undulating terrain through streams and pines. It then descends to a swing bridge and the Huia Dam Rd.

From grass area at foot of Lower Nihotupu Dam, track ascends to water tank on flat-topped ridge, then follows a bulldozed track for 50m. From here track bears right up very steep, deeply rutted track to ridge top, follows ridge a short distance, then descends steeply to cross Kakamatua Stream. Track then ascends through pines and continues over gently undulating terrain and across small stream to Nihotupu Ridge Track. Track continues a short distance along ridge then branches right to descend to swing bridge and Huia Dam Road. A short branch on the right leads to top of dam.


What to expect:

Tramping tracks will:

* consist of formed and drained surfaces.
* be signposted at track entrances and key junctions.

Tramping tracks may:

* have structures in permanent wet areas but waterways will not generally be bridged.

Tramping tracks may also have limited track information, and steep grades.

Suitable for people of reasonable fitness and experience.


To get to Huia:

Take the North-Western Motorway to the Great North Rd Exit. Follow Great North Rd onto Ash St which leads onto Rata St. Take Titirangi Rd right through Titirangi Village to the roundabout. Take Huia Rd, travel through Laingholm and Parau to Huia.
