Experience every kind of seaside scenery on this epic coastal journey, from Auckland to Napier, otherwise known as the Pacific Coast Highway. The trip takes you off the beaten track to some of the North Island's most beautiful and remote coastal areas.

Around the Firth of Thames, on your way to the old gold town of Coromandel, you’ll see peaceful beaches and picturesque bays. On the other side of the peninsula, surf washes onto fine white sand - dig your own spa pool at geothermal Hot Water Beach. The lifestyle city of Tauranga is nice for a night before you move onto Whakatane, where an active volcano steams offshore.

After the friendly settlements of East Cape, you’ll arrive in the Chardonnay town of Gisborne. Take a detour to the untouched forest of Te Urewera. Napier is your final destination – enjoy the architecture and the wine.

On your way south, make sure you visit the two must-see attractions of the Coromandel: Cathedral Cove - a picturesque photo spot - and Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own natural spa. You can see both these attractions in one day - but you'll need to time it carefully, as you need to be at Hot Water Beach within 2 hours of low tide to access the naturally heated water.

Whangamata is one of the country’s most attractive surf towns. Enjoy the beach, cafes and bush walks. Dive and fishing tours are easily arranged. Several charter companies run day trips to Mayor Island, which is actually the summit of a volcano rising from the sea floor.

The journey to Tauranga will take you past historic Waihi, a gold mining town. You’ll enjoy the fresh green scenery of the Athenree Gorge before you come across the town of Katikati, known for its murals.

The harbour city of Tauranga is the Bay of Plenty’s biggest population centre. Enjoy waterfront dining and live music on The Strand, or explore the popular surf beach of nearby Mount Maunganui.
