Haven’t decided yet on how to travel around New Zealand, why not try a motorhome holiday?
New Zealand is the ideal country for this and few destinations are equally suited. The roads are well maintained, there is little traffic, the scenery changes all the time and the infrastructure is top notch.
Many travellers have already tried it and they soon realized what great freedom and flexibility it offers.
You basically move around with your home, so forget about hotel check in, packing and unpacking your suitcase or following a strict itinerary. Stop whenever you want, sleep in the wild, cook your own meal and what’s best, the view from the kitchen changes daily!
Motorhomes are all equipped with huge windows at the rear and front so everyone on board makes the most of the view.
If it is comfort that worries you, you will be surprised to see how spacious and comfortable motorhomes are, some with leather interior, gas cooker, quality dishes and utensils, toilet and shower, good bedding and you even get a heater for those chilly nights as well as a DVD player.
New Zealand has a strong culture of camping, in fact you will most likely encounter on the road some old school buses transformed into amazing homes! Thanks to this, the country is dotted with excellent camping facilities to make your travels the more enjoyable.
Our advice to make the most of your motorhome holiday:
If you are trying to decide between two sizes of motorhome, choose the larger!
You will greatly appreciate the extra living space. To travel in comfort, choose a 4 berth if you’re 2 and a 6 berth if you are 4.
If you want to visit both islands, travel one way.
It will save you from travelling back and forth. We also suggest starting in Christchurch and finishing in Auckland. Availability is often better this way and you are likely to get a good special.
Get off the beaten track and try some freedom camping.
New Zealand has an excellent network of conservation campsites managed by DOC (Deparment Of Conservation) www.doc.govt.nz There are often basic but for a small fee only (a few dollars per person) you sleep in heavenly places, beside a white sand beach, at the foothill of the Southern Alps or in the heart of a National Park. Our three favourite DOC campsites: Matai Bay in Northland, Totaranui the heart of the Abel Tasman National Park and Moke Lake, near Queenstown...
