Experience Wild New Zealand

Wild landscapes & nature are cornerstones of the New Zealand experience. Discover wild New Zealand at the country's only two Wilderness Lodges.

New Zealand was the last major landmass colonised by people. These remote islands enjoyed 80 million years of splendid solitude prior to human arrival 800 years ago. Today’s fascinating and often bizarre wildlife is a product of this natural experiment in evolutionary isolation, once described by British naturalist, David Bellamy, as “the nearest approach to life on another planet".

This is the land that time forgot. Home to alpine parrots, rainforest-nesting penguins and century-old reptiles as well as volcanos, glaciers, fiords, and rainforests - all in an area similar in size to Colorado or the United Kingdom.

To experience wild New Zealand, travellers must venture beyond the big tourist destinations. The real magic is found in the ‘in-between’, those largely uninhabited parts of the country where signs of civilisation are scarce and few people choose to stop.

New Zealand has only two Wilderness Lodges, both in wild and remote parts of the South Island. Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki is surrounded by ancient West Coast rainforest on the banks of the Moeraki River. It is a peaceful natural paradise in the heart of Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area offering stylish accommodation, fine food and an exciting programme of nature adventures. Guests can hike wild seacoast, watch rainforest penguins and kayak pristine rainforest lakes.

The second Wilderness Lodge is located on a spectacular 4000 acre working sheep farm and nature reserve high in the Southern Alps. Like its sister property, Wilderness Lodge Arthur’s Pass offers guests a unique wilderness experience. Quality food and hospitality are complemented by nature and sheep farm activities. See sheep-dogs in action, watch sheep shearing, kayak mountain lakes and hike alpine trails with expert local guides.

For nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and wilderness seekers, New Zealand is the ultimate destination. The Wilderness Lodges offer travellers the opportunity to experience the very best of wild New Zealand in comfort and style.

Wilderness Lodge Arthur’s Pass is located on the Great Alpine Highway (73) linking Christchurch and the South Island's West Coast. Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki is located between Franz Josef Glacier and Wanaka/Queenstown on the West Coast Highway (6).
