Deep in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island is Fiordland, a dramatic and untouched natural wonderland whose rich and diverse landscapes are a must see.

Deep in the heart of New Zealand’s South Island is Fiordland, a dramatic and untouched natural wonderland whose rich and diverse landscapes are home to three of New Zealand’s Great Walks. In a nutshell, Fiordland is a haven for walkers and hikers looking for a truly unforgettable South Island experience.

There are not many places across the globe where you can experience three of the world’s most unique hikes in the same area but Fiordland has it all. The Kepler Track, Milford Track and the Routeburn Track are each thoroughly deserving of their Great Walks New Zealand accolade, and although each are different in their intensity, beauty and discovery, all three Great Walks greatly complement each other, offering a fulfilling introduction to natural New Zealand.

Routeburn Track

The Routeburn Track is a spectacular alpine adventure that offers a window into the soul of ancient New Zealand. The Routeburn Track day walk takes hikers on a journey through succulent rainforests, alpine gardens and herb fields abundant with native New Zealand flora and fauna.

At the Key Summit, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of snow-capped mountainous landscapes, and glacial carved valleys, all housed under the watchful eye of New Zealand’s stunning Southern Alps.

Milford Track

The Milford Track is one of New Zealand’s - if not the world’s - most famous hikes. A breathtaking slice of pure New Zealand, the historic Milford Track has been well trodden for centuries. It is a hikers’ paradise and a truly great companion to the other two New Zealand Great Walks found in the Fiordland region.

Experiences on a Milford Sound walk include a stroll along the azure Arthur River and through dense wildlife filled rainforests to the Giant’s Gate Falls, a picture-perfect waterfall whose alpine water cascades into a pool dotted with riverbed rocks. Throughout the walk hikers will also encounter towering trees, native fernery and an introduction to the history of the area.

At the end of the walk, hikers are greeted by the sight of Milford Sound – once hailed the Eighth Wonder of the World – for its captivating beauty. Milford Sound is just one of Fiordland’s natural highlights, surrounded by soaring cliffs, dramatic ancient glaciers and home to abundant wildlife.

Kepler Track

The Routeburn Track and the Milford Track offer stunning alpine terrain and lush rainforests, while the Kepler Track New Zealand offers another perspective on Fiordland’s great outdoors.

Offering an alpine adventure hike, where dense rainforest gives way to swathes of silver beech-trees, shimmering lakes, and towering cliffs of limestone. One major highlight of the Kepler Track can be found at the summit of Mt Luxmore, where views above and beyond the track await. It’s the perfect platform for viewing the interchangeable terrain and landscapes of the Fiordland region.

Unlike the other two Great Walks in the area, the Kepler Track also offers untouched sandy-shore beaches, another feature of this diverse part of New Zealand.
