Nestled at the heart of the ‘Valley of the Vines’ is the award-winning boutique winery, Gibbston Valley Winery.
Founder Alan Brady planted the first grapes in Gibbston Valley in the early 1980s, establishing the world’s southern-most vineyard. In 1987, he released the region’s first wine.
Since then, Gibbston Valley has won over 300 national and international wine awards, and has been a leader in forging Central Otago’s international reputation for world class Pinot Noir, elegant Chardonnay and aromatic Pinot Gris.
As the home to New Zealand’s largest underground wine cave, the winery is a must-see for visitors to the region. With tasting tours departing on the hour, wine enthusiasts can gain a unique taste of the region touring the wine cave and vineyard. There is also a tempting selection of wines on offer at the winery restaurant – matched with inspired local cuisine – and cellar door tasting rooms.
For a lighter sample of local fare, the on-site cheesery offers a selection of hampers – an ideal lunch option if you wish to explore the region firsthand, taking a walk along the Gibbston Valley River Trail. This walkway is open all year and is a great way to take in the dramatic Central Otago scenery.
