Wellington is a great place to visit during your time in New Zealand. There are hundreds of great restaurants and cafes, a compact CBD makes for fantastic shopping, Te Papa National Museum, and the walk along harbour front to Oriental Bay is divine!
But what if shopping just isn’t your thing and you want a physical challenge? Wellington has ‘that’ sort of thing to. Porirua, a satellite city 30 min by train to the North of Wellington, is home to a bunch of varied outdoor experiences.
Adrenalin Forest is an aerial high wire obstacle course and is known for high excitement, stomach churning challenge, and confidence building. Located high in the trees, Adrenalin Forest features over 30 fun filled challenges across six levels. Each level is harder than the last, with obstacles starting at 1.5 metres above the ground that are suitable for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. To conquer the whole course and claim your bragging rights, you’ll be climbing, jumping and swinging at least 30 metres up in the air. Nerves will definitely be tested, but the revolutionary Clic-iT safety system, which ensures a continuous connection to the safety line, will keep you safe at all times. Adrenalin Forest also has parks in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty and Christchurch.
Mountain Biking on Mount Rangituhi
The Mt Rangituhi Mountain Biking Park is only 2km from Porirua railway station, or a 20 minutes drive to central Wellington. Mt Rangituhi affords mountain bike trails suitable for beginners to advanced riders. Offering around 7km of purpose-built singletrack connecting to the main 4WD routes which take you up to the 470m summit. The summit has spectacular views to Mana and Kapiti Islands in the north, around to the Marlborough Sounds and Kaikoura mountains in the South Island. The terrain is super-diverse with the sound of birdsong in the native bush, pine forest, glades of gum trees and open grasslands. At the base is Camp Elsdon with campervan parks.
Mana Island Bird Sanctuary
Mana Island is a predator-free island located off the coast of Porirua managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in the restoration of Mana Island. ‘Friends of Mana Island’ run guided trips to Mana Island. These depart from Mana Marina, Porirua and cost $60. A trained guide will take you around the island and provide information about the many highlights. This includes historical information as well as details about the restoration projects, current activities and wildlife. From the island there are great views of the South Island, Kapiti Island and the North Island. We will stop for lunch along the way. The walk requires a reasonable level of fitness with some hill tracks. Or you may decide to stay on the lower areas of the island and go at your own pace.
The Adrenalin Forest is a great confidence builder and wicked adrenalin rush adventure park in a beautiful forest setting. The parks feature an aerial obstacle course and flying foxes with different pathways of progressive difficulty.
