Sailing with the Barbary on the Great Lake

A stunning cruise aboard the Barbary to the famous Maori Rock Carvings

I must be honest, I've lived in Taupo for nearly six years and I've never been on the lake! There's no excuse really, it's one of those things that was always going to be there so it could wait. Then I had a call from Sarah at the Barbary, she asked if I would like to take a trip on their boat to view the Maori Rock Carvings, I politely explained that I had my four year old son with me that day and she told me that he could come too. No reason not to then!

The weather was excellent, warm and sunny but not too hot. Skipper Jamie set sail from the Harbour using the whisper quiet electric engine (there wasn't much wind for the sails) and soon enough we were sailing around the various bays on our way. On our travels we saw a couple of the other operators namely the 'Fearless' and the 'Ernest Kemp' on their way too.

On board there are huge bean bags to sit or lay on and once you're in you don't really want to get out, they really are that comfy. Jamie provides informative and funny commentary throughout the trip, pointing out loads of interesting features whilst giving a few history lessons too. Soon enough we arrived at the Carvings and WOW they really are very impressive. At over 10m tall you can't help but be amazed at the skill and workmanship that went into it's creation and that of the smaller carvings to one side. We stopped for loads of photos, a complimentary beer and sausage before heading back the way we had come.

This trip was everything I hoped it would be, calm, relaxing, informative, scenic and stunning! The Barbary is a beautiful wooden yacht built in 1926 and once won in a card game by none other than Errol Flynn! It has been lovingly refurbished by the current owners and now offers the daily scenic tours as well as moonlighting during the evenings as New Zealand's only floating cinema! Each week a different movie is shown on their 3m outdoor screen whilst you relax and enjoy the free popcorn and licensed bar and enjoying the stunning Taupo sunsets on the lake!

The trip lasts between 2 and 3 hours (a long time for a 4 year old) but there is that much going on that even the most easily bored loved it, especially the yummy sausage and glass of juice! So next you come and play at Lake Taupo TOP 10 Holiday Resort be sure to take a trip on the lake with The Barbary.
