Spotlight on Hawke's Bay

If you’re looking for award-winning wineries, unique Art Deco architecture, and of the best weather in New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay is the place to go!

If you’re looking for a holiday spent wining and dining at award-winning wineries, experiencing farmer’s markets, unique Art Deco architecture, and some of the best weather in New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay is the place to go.

Hawke’s Bay is New Zealand’s oldest wine region, and the country’s leading red wine region, featuring over 200 vineyards, 76 wineries, and 36 cellars doors. The oldest winery in Hawke’s Bay is Mission Estate, established in 1851 by French missionaries. Hawke’s Bay is renowned for its world-class Merlot Cabernet (Bordeaux) blends, Syrah, and rich, full bodied Chardonnay, in addition to aromatic whites, and soft, flavourful Pinot Noir. We recommend experiencing a private VIP wine tasting with a colourful Hawke’s Bay winemaker and a tour behind the scenes at a working winery to experience this extraordinary wine region.

Hawke’s Bay is also home to the Art Deco Capital of the World, Napier. Art Deco was at the height of its popularity in 1931, when an earthquake struck Napier. The city was rebuilt primarily in the Art Deco style, and by the end of the decade, Napier was the newest city on the globe. Although heavily influenced by the original European and American styles, Napier’s Art Deco is uniquely New Zealand, with Maori motifs and the buildings of local architect, Louis Hay. Spending time in Napier hearing the inspiring story of rebirth allows you to savour the spirit of the optimistic Art Deco era and Great Gatsby-esque romanticism. A visit to Napier wouldn’t be complete without experiencing Art Deco & Wings.  This is exclusive to Escape NZ, with a tour of the city’s architectural gems in a 1920-30s classic car, complete with a driver in a 1920s vintage uniform, a private VIP wine tasting and gourmet three course lunch and a flight in a VIP spec helicopter over Cape Kidnappers’ sheer cliffs.

Hawke’s Bay is also home to many other unique attractions. In Te Awanga you’ll find the Cape Kidnappers Golf Course, designed by legendary golf architect Tom Doak, perched on a cliff-edge 140m above sea level, giving you stunning views and a one-of-a-kind golfing experience.  Nesting at Cape Kidnappers is the world’s largest mainland Gannet colony. Hawke’s Bay is also home to the Bi-Annual Food and Wine Classic (F.A.W.C!), a culinary festival that allows you to sample the very best of what the region has to offer, all in one place!

This is just a small glimpse into the diverse experiences to be had in Hawke’s Bay, and Escape NZ can help you arrange yours. Indulge with a short escape showcasing the best of the best in Hawke’s Bay.  Our escapes are handpicked using local knowledge and personal relationships, so you can experience the picture-perfect locations you see on postcards and hidden gems only the locals know about. Blow away the cobwebs with an Ultimate Luxury package at The Farm at Cape Kidnappers or for boutique luxury in the heart of Napier, we have the perfect romantic Winter weekend escape.
