Tararua Northern Access

Kiriwhakapapa is an excellent camping and picnic area as well as being one of the northern most Waiararapa access points to the Tararua Forest Park.

Kiriwhakapapa is easily accessible, just north from Masterton on State Highway 2 and turn left into Kiriwhakapapa Road.  The last 4kms of the road in gravel and fairly narrow in parts, so take your time.

From the carpark there’s no walking required to get to the campsites. There’s a fantastic big table carved from a tree in a shelter and a toilet block. The campsites are flat and although there is not a great deal of shade, it’s sheltered from the wind.  There is no tap water provided but the creek is only a stone’s throw from the grassed campsite clearing.

As an entry into the Tararua Forest Park, Kiriwhakapapa is the starting point for a couple of decent walks as well as joining up with other tramping tracks.  There’s the tramline walk which takes you to Mikimiki in around 2 hours or you can tramp to the Blue Range Hut which, depending on how quickly you go, is 2-3 hours.  The tramline track is also a grade 4 mountain bike track, for advanced riders, so both riders and walkers need to be aware of each other.
