The Octagon was planned by 1846, and its fortunes have waxed and waned with those of Dunedin.
The space seems to work now. It's not overly large, but then nor is the city, so it's a people-friendly place.
Many of the features which make Dunedin special are visible here: there's green space; vistas of bush, hill and harbour; dignity and solidity in the buildings represented; sufficient sense of enclosure; and numerous references to the arts.
With its lively cafe and bar scene, The Octagon has become the heart of a revitalised city. See for yourself on our guided Old Town, Breakfast, and Heritage Highlights Walks.
