The Old Post Office in Paparoa. Built around 1903 this old kauri building has been a part of the community ever since. We bought it around a year ago and have been slowly meeting so many people who have had associations with it, both locals and tourists.
A local gave us a photo of the first postmistress standing on the front step, his grandmother and her two sons who were killed in the first World War. A man called in whose father was postmaster in WWll and he remembered his friend taking a flying leap into what is now a bathroom window.
Other local remember the parties that the two post office workers had in their shed outside the post office, sometime after WWll.
We are still finding bottles. Digging gardens on the back lawn I have unearthed old horse and bullock collars, rejects from the old Saddlery Cottage next door. Early European history.
However, just down the road we have an intriguing walk around an old maori pa site. Apparently abandoned “in haste” circa 1750, you can wander around the hilltop and speculate on the events of the past.
Young kauri (only a few hundred years old)! grow in silence, many sprouting from the old middens and fortification pits still showing clearly. I managed to get a site map and it is fascinating.
Here at the Old Post Office we feel at the heart of so much history. Make a comfortable base with us while you explore the quiet, hidden gems of the Kaipara. Fishing, climbing, walking, kayaking, swimming, museum visits, 9 hole golf courses, local olive grove and kumara vodka still tours.
All this just quietly waiting off the beaten track. Then return to a lovingly prepared meal and the relaxation of the view over the gardens.
