A guided walk through the Waimangu Volcanic Valley reveals the geothermal attractions uncovered by the 1886 eruption. Next, cruise Lake Rotomahana and over the final place of the Pink and White Terraces. destroyed in 1886. Discover stunning steaming cliffs, and active geothermal areas around the lakes edge.
The 1.5km Isthmus Track walking trail links Lake Rotomahana to Lake Tarawera. From here join Totally Tarawera for an eco-tour on Lake Tarawera. Enjoy Māori culture, geothermal and ecological elements, and a stop at Hot Water Beach and lakeside natural hot pools.
Next, visit the Buried Village of Te Wairoa, to explore the museum area and archaeological sites, revealing the devastation of the eruption to this once bustling settlement.
