So … you have one day in Wellington and want to absorb as much as you can of our city?
Here are a few suggestions to ensure you experience some of our favourite Wellington locations.
Most visitors to Wellington take a ride on our iconic Cable Car. This has been running since 1902, and whilst the cars themselves have changed, the route remains. It’s not a suspended cable car, rather it runs on tracks on the ground and crosses paths in the middle.
It runs regularly from Lambton Quay in the city to Upland Road in Kelburn at the top. The Kelburn Kiosk at the top has great coffee and ice cream and is a great spot to check out some views at the nearby lookout. Here you’ll also find the Cable Car Museum containing the story of Wellington’s iconic cable car
You’re a world away from the heart of the city after this short journey to the top of our. It is classified as a Garden of National Significance by the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and is a Historic Places Trust Heritage Area with a history that goes back to 1868.
Make sure you take some time at the top though. A visit to Carter Observatory is well worthwhile and of interest to those keen to understand our unique Southern Skies. You’ll be inspired by the planetarium, multi media galleries and late night telescope viewing on Tuesday and Saturday nights.
Nearby, the Dominion and Thomas King observatories, established during the early settlement of our country, and the historic Krupp Gun, thought to be the only one of its kind remaining, sit proudly with their stories to tell.
