Arthurs Pass and the Canterbury High Country are rich with early European history from the 19th and early 20th century. On our day tour from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass one of the early pioneers whose work we see is Oscar Coberger.
Oscar came to New Zealand from Germany and was a ski instructor at the Hermitage in Mount Cook before moving to Arthur's Pass in 1928. Oscar set up shop in Arthur's Pass (his store is now the Wobbly Kea cafe, where we have afternoon tea on our tour) and gave the first display of Alpine skiing on the Bealey Glacier (in the Bealey Valley where we hike). He was also instrumental in establishing Temple Basin ski area in the eary 1930s, and we have views across the valley to the skifield from the higher parts of our hike. Many New Zealanders will recognize the name Coberger, Oscar's granddaughter Annelise became the first Kiwi to win a World Cup event and Winter Olympic medal in the 1990s.
One of the highlights of our day tour to Arthur's Pass is always the visit to the Wobbly Kea for afternoon tea, after our guided walk up the Bealey Valley. Oscar's legacy lives on in Arthurs Pass and the owner of Oscar's has kept the theme alive with some great old photos and mementos of Oscar and his wife Dagmar. Come and meet them for yourself on our Arthur's Pass Hiking & TranzAlpine one day tour from Christchurch.
