Gibbston, also known as the 'Valley of the Vineyards', is one of the most beautiful wine growing regions you will ever come across. The vineyards are sandwiched, at times prominent, between rugged schist mountains and the rugged Kawarau River ravine.

This highland area is affected by freezing winters, dry summers, and extreme temperature changes between night and day. These challenging conditions have produced a wine that has always been outstanding, earned worldwide recognition and a myriad of international awards. More than 70% of the grapes grown here are pinot noir varieties; other varieties include chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling, and sauvignon blanc.

Apart from wine, Gibbston is also very well known for its delicious cheese . You can add sheep's milk cheese and washed rind to your picnic basket, and it's incomplete without a few bottles of the very special pinot noir.

At the western end of the Gibbston you will find the Kawarau Bridge and watch bungy jumpers leap from over the river in very heavy water, off the deck, or you can take the jump yourself.
