Sunny Tairawhiti is home to one of New Zealand's most important grape growing regions, centred around Gisborne.
Located in the most easterly point of North Island, Gisborne is the first wine region in the world to see the sun. Revered as a top Chardonnay-producing area, it also has a reputation for world-class Gewurtztraminer and Pinot Gris. The Chardonnay Capital of New Zealand – as Gisborne is also called – features a mix of high sunshine hours and a relaxed lifestyle that never fails to impress travellers.
Gisborne’s wine growing area is made up of several distinct localities, each with their own unique soil and climatic features.
Start your wine discovery at the Gisborne Wine Centre in the heart of the city. You can enjoy an extensive range of Gisborne wines while enjoying great harbour views. Or head out on a wine trail that will lead you to stunning boutique wineries such as Wrights Vineyard & Winery and Kirkpatrick Estate Winery, all within an easy short drive from the city centre. You can make bookings to visit these boutique wineries at the centre. Bookings are recommended as not all wineries are open to the public at all times.
Among the well-known local wineries are Matawhero, Millton, Longbush and Huntaway.
