New Zealand’s largest lake, an ancient volcanic landscape, lush native forests and geothermal activity make Taupō home to varied scenic highlights.

Experience the natural beauty of  Huka Falls ia powerful waterfall that transports water from Lake Taupō into the Waikato River at a rate of 220,000 litres per second. View crystal-clear waters passing through a narrow rocky gorge and over the 11-metre-high waterfall, creating a spectacular pool of whitewater at the base. For something more relaxing, explore the tranquil beauty of Lake Taupō with a lakeside walk or immerse yourself in native forest with a nature hike on one of the many trails throughout the region

For a dose of culture and art, don’t miss experiencing the Mine Bay Rock Carvings – only accessible by boat or kayak. Nestled in the cliffs that surround Lake Taupō, these Maori carvings were created by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell to portray the story of his ancestor Ngātoroirangi and are an impressive 10 metres in height.

The Craters of the Moon is an impressive geothermal attraction. Safely view the geothermal phenomena from a wooden boardwalk that winds its way through the valley filled with hissing vents, steaming craters and cauldrons of bubbling mud. The turnoff is sign posted 5.5kms north from the i-SITE in Taupō.
