• Owlcatraz wildlife park
  • Historic railway station
  • Mangahao Stream kayaking

While travelling around New Zealand you might hear our native owls calling “morepork” at night, but in Shannon you can actually meet some up close.

Situated between Levin and Palmerston North, the charming town of Shannon is home to Owlcatraz, a native bird and wildlife park that has a purpose built owl enclosure that mimics their natural habitat conditions, a great way to get up close to one of New Zealand's treasured birds.

Shannon is well known for their boutique shopping and great coffee, making them a popular stop off point for travellers. Local attractions include the historic railway station, the Helenstown miniature village and the Mangahao Stream which provides an international grade kayaking course known as the Mangahao Slalom. Great fishing and swimming spots abound, and beautiful bush walks are on offer.
