For someone terribly afraid of heights, bungee jumping is the last thing you would want to try. Ever. I said I would never do it…unless I go to Queenstown, New Zealand, the adrenaline capital of the world! I never thought I would ever make it over to this part of the world, so I felt safe in my statement. When I finally found myself in Queenstown recently, I instantly regretted ever speaking those few words. Now I HAVE to do it, but at least I’m in the home of bungee jumping.
There is no other company I would ever chosen to bungee with other than AJ Hackett Bungy, the pioneers of bungee jumping! That coupled with the fact that they have a perfect safety record sealed the deal for me. Am I really going to do this? I got up to the platform where the crew were all energetic and trying to pump me up. They were all talking but I couldn’t hear them. All I could hear was the sound of my heart beating, pounding harder on my chest than I have ever felt. It was too late to back out now. “And 3…2…1…bungee!” “wait, wait” I chickened out.
I threw out some stupid question, trying to prolong it as much as I could. There were others waiting, I had to go. After a little pep talk from Yorgi D (the best motivator ever), I was ready. It’s do or die time! Off I went head first, the weight instantly lifting off my body. In a strange way, I felt a calmness I was not expecting. Shortly after I was smacked with an adrenaline kick, soaring over the gorgeous Queenstown skyline. It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments I will never forget.
I had conquered one of my biggest fears and I’m so glad I went through with it. That feeling of free falling in the air is something hard to describe, but it sure was magical. If you ever find yourself in Queenstown, do not miss out on this incredible experience. It was the highlight of my entire New Zealand trip. The AJ Hackett Bungy crew made this activity extra special. They were making jokes and lightening the mood at the moment that anxiety was kicking in hard. I literally couldn’t have done it without them. A huge thank you for that!
