Explore the Seabird Coast and Pacific Coast Highway

If you’re planning to drive from Auckland to the Coromandel or further south we’d recommend that you take the scenic Pacific Coast Highway / Seabird Coast route instead of State Highway 25. Turn off the motoraway just south of Manukau and travel via Clevedon, Kaiaua and Miranda for a change of scenery and some exploring.

Explore scenic Clevedon (Farmers Market on Sunday mornings), Kawakawa Bay, and the seaside village of Orere Point. Visit Waharau and Tapapakanga Regional Parks with nice walks and bush.

Devour Fresh Fish and Chips in Kaiaua

Kaiaua is a small coastal town famous for its delicious fish ‘n’ chips. Stop here while driving from Auckland to Miranda and treat yourself to the local, award winning seafood delights.

Pause to Appreciate Nature

About five minutes from Miranda, the beach on the western shores of the Firth of Thames is home to over a 100 migratory bird species. The Seabird Coast has up to 20,000 seabirds and waders in peak season. It also includes a rich marine life of oysters, crabs, whales, dolphins and fish such as the flounder, kahawai and snapper. Visit the Shorebird Centre and also observe the birds from the hides.

Call in at the Miranda Organic Orchards for organic fruits and juices, cheeses, yogurt and preserves. They also have a sculpture walk and exhibition open in January, or during the year by appointment. Sculptures are for sale.

Enjoy horse riding through a bush lined farm or have a picnic while bird-watching.

Relax and Soak in the Miranda Hot Springs

Pamper yourself at the Miranda Hot Springs, either in the public pools or the beautiful guest pool in the Miranda Holiday Park. The soothing natural mineral water will rejuvenate you for all the adventures ahead. Linger after sundown to enjoy the beauty of the moon rising behind the Coromandel range.

Miranda Holiday Park is perfect for a stopover. Here you can pitch a tent or stay in a campervan, chalets, apartments or the lodge – something for everyone. Unwind on the beautiful site that offers a luxurious hot thermal pool, massages, a tennis court and also a playground for kids.

The Pacific Coast Highway / Seabird Coast journey is sure to be rewarding with seabird watching, peaceful scenery, hot pools and scrumptious local food.
