One of the biggest international sporting events held each year in March and the ultimate in triathlon. Starting at 7am in Taupo athletes begin their challenge to complete the course by midnight. The course allows for spectators to be as close as possible. The first Ironman held in Taupo was in March 1999 with over 700 competitors.

Aratiatia Rapids come to life several times a day when the dam gates of the Waikato River are opened. Within 5 minutes, this turns a dry gorge into a magnificent waterfall before your eyes. There are several vantage points and scenic two-hour hiking/biking trail between Huka Falls and the Rapids with stunning views of the Waikato.
