Hiking with Heart! (and Huttons)

Kaikoura's Puhi Puhi Valley is the setting for one of the world's most special walking tracks - it's adventure with a conscience.

Kaikoura's Puhi Puhi Valley is the last place on earth that the endangered Hutton's Shearwater calls home. Visitors explore this rugged, spectacular landscape by taking an organised "Kaikoura Wilderness Walk" to Shearwater Lodge, where owner Nicky McArthur shares her passion for the endangered species (not to mention her famous home cooking).

Avid trampers and bushwalkers won't expect the creature comforts (hot shower? fresh linen? underfloor heating?) - but you won't hear them complaining either. Luxury has never felt so good as after a healthy day's hike.

Visitors also may never have seen this type of "tourism with a conscience." Although Nicky and her team openly welcome visitors to their special Kaikoura wilderness, they won't let them leave without sharing their commitment - to care for the rare Huttons species and ensure that visitors appreciate the part this lodge plays in protecting their future.
