Perching like a Bird high above the Forest Floor

The hike to Alice Nash Memorial Hertiage Lodge is a family friendly and scenic 45 minute journey.

Along the path you'll pass stoat traps laid by the local NZ Deerstalkers Association, and traverse a picturesque arched wooden bridge, which crosses high above a narrow gorge in Umutoi Creek. The original lodge burnt down in 2005, however with a generous donation by the family of the late Alice Nash, who had loved and explored this area often, the NZ Deerstalkers Association partnered with DOC and the local community to rebuild the lodge in 2007. So, prepare to enjoy a comfortable pit stop, whilst enjoying birdsong and sipping a hot coffee before heading back.

The walking track starts from a car park off Table Flat Road just north of the township of Apiti.  Apiti is located one hour's drive north of Palmerston North City. From the car park allow 45minutes to reach Heritage Hut.

This walk is on The Iron Gates touring route of The Country Road. For more information about what there is to see and do in the vicinity, or to request a map, see the website.
