Skydiving in your 70s… why not?!
Born in Tanzania and having lived in England, Australia and now settled on her farm in Auckland, there’s not much that 72 year old Elizabeth Olsen hasn’t seen or done. On Tuesday however, Elizabeth decided that her bucket list had to have one more thing crossed off of it.
Without telling David, her husband of 38 years, Elizabeth snuck out of Blanket Bay in Glenorchy where she is staying for a “relaxing holiday” to freefall 45 seconds from 12,000 feet with Skydive Paradise who operate from the airfield just next door.
“Walking towards the plane, it was as if it wasn’t me, as if I was in someone else’s body”
But walk towards the plane she did, get in the plane she did, and as she thought to herself, “I can’t stop this” she and Skydive Paradise tandem master CJ jumped out of the aeroplane together for 7,000 feet of freefall before finishing the last 5,000 feet under canopy. As an extra touch, Elizabeth landed at Blanket Bay where the staff all gathered on the front lawn to watch her triumphant return.
What did she do straight after her jump; “I had a jolly big cup of tea!”
As for her husband… they’re coming back to Glenorchy for Christmas 2012 and Skydive Paradise has reserved two spaces, this time at 15,000 feet.
