Farmers’ markets are a well known tradition throughout New Zealand, but there is a winter time myth hanging around that I think we need to dispel. While spring and summer evoke thoughts of fresh, rich red berries and gourmet meats on the barbeque, maybe a salad made of locally grown rocket, radishes and goats feta from the farm down the way.... winter and autumn are just as good, believe me.
Feilding Farmers’ Market is still alive and kicking, every month of the year. Winter brings a whole new palette of colours, speckled along the different stalls. I love the deep reds of tamarillos, the mossy green on feijoas and the nutty browns of walnuts. You can find all you need to make the perfect winter’s feast. Think of a scooped out Kamokamo, the glossy orange skin encasing a spicy pumpkin curry. Rich casseroles made with the freshest winter vegetables and organic meats or rustic stews with attitude, sprinkled with herbs and spices from the local growers and makers.
Hearty, soul warming soups bubble away on a barbeque (kiwi ingenuity at its finest) and mini ovens keep pasties and pies hot and crispy. If it’s cold enough that you can see your breath on the air, bundle up, grab your favourite java and head to the nearest farmers’ market for a gourmet feast sure to warm you from head to toe.
