If you are looking for things to do in and around Waihi Beach, then look no further than the breath-taking nature trails. With an abundance of seaside walks and forest trails, there is something for every nature lover to admire. Below are some of our favourite highlights when exploring around Waihi:
Enjoy panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Waihi beach with a walk around Orokawa Bay. Access to Orokawa Bay is by an easy track that starts at the Northern end of Waihi Beach and takes about 45 minutes to reach the secluded beach. Beautiful Pohutukawa trees line the beach and provide shelter to enjoy a picnic looking out at the stunning vista. The Bay is within a designated scenic reserve that comprises of 145 hectares of native bush.
The Rail Tunnel Loop:
This trail follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi, giving access to impressive remains from the mining and railway eras. Walking through Karangahake George is an explorer’s delight. Along the way see the remains of all the train tracks that carried the quarts out to the old batteries.
A stunning surprise towards the end is a walk through the old railway tunnel, which is well lit and takes you over the Ohinemuri River. From here you can choose to continue the historic Karangahake Gorge walkway or loop back. This is a great walk suitable for the family or anyone wanting to do something a little different. The loop takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and you can start the loop at various entry points.
Athenree Reserve Walk:
Meander around the grassy reserve on the edge of Athenree that winds its way around the stunning coastline. The walk is lined by mature Pohutukawa trees and is a charming stroll where native birds can be spotted. The 20-minute stroll begins at the playground and is a great walk for kids to learn more about nature and enjoy the playground afterwards.
If you are looking for accommodation whilst exploring the stunning area, consider booking at Athenree Hot Springs and Holiday park. With its central location, you are ideally located to explore all the local attractions and walking trails. After a busy day checking out the sites, you can head back and relax in the hot mineral pools or have dinner under trees overlooking the bay.
