Looking to make the most of this amazing summer weather? Surrounded by spectacular coastline and stunning scenery, there is no better time to get out and explore the beautiful beaches of the Bay of Plenty Region. Whether you are on a weekend away, visiting by Cruise ship, or exploring for a week or two – there is plenty to offer all beach lovers.
The name itself comes from the iconic volcano (extinct by the way!) that sits at the top of the peninsula, with the coastal resort town of Mount Maunganui spread below. Beneath the Mountain are two fantastic beach options. There is the harbour beach of Pilot Bay, which is sheltered by the sand spit and provides a safe beach for swimming and boating. Here you can look out over Tauranga Harbour which is often bustling with Cruise ships, container ships and recreational boats. There are large Norfolk pines spread along the beach, providing shade on those hot summer days.
At the northern end of Pilot Bay is the beginning of the circular base walk around the volcano. You can also follow the path to the summit of Mount Maunganui where there are fantastic panoramic views back down onto the town and bay.
On the ocean side is the famous Mount Maunganui surf beach. Known for its fantastic waves and golden sand, during summer this beach becomes one of the most popular holiday spots in New Zealand. This stretch of stunning beach hosts everything from surf-lifesaving events to beach volleyball and sand castle building. The beach is patrolled by Surf Lifeguards during the busy summer months.
Ocean Beach and Papamoa
Ocean Beach extends to Papamoa to the south and offers more beautiful rolling waves and miles of golden sand beach. The beach is accessible from many points along the coastal main road, and unlike similar beaches around the world, you will always find a large stretch of sand to spread out and spend the day.
Picture nine kilometers (nearly 6 miles) of sweeping white sand and awesome surf and you can see why Waihi Beach is such a popular holiday spot for surfers and families alike. This can either be a fantastic day trip from Tauranga or a destination itself.
If you prefer a more sheltered beach, then Bowentown at the southern end of Waihi Beach is a beautiful spot. From here you can access Anzac, Shelly and Cave Bays. Anzac Bay is a popular reserve with shady pohutukawas and barbecues and the sheltered Cave Bay is a popular fishing spot.
