Located in a beautiful valley hidden in the heart of the Southern Alps is the home of Rangitata Rafts. Yes, these guys recognised the beauty of this valley long before Peter Jackson filmed ‘Edoras’, Lord of the Rings!
So, just who are the characters who give up the bright lights of other tourist meccas to work and play in such a unique location and enjoy sharing its magic with others?
Today we will introduce you to ‘Tussock’. Firstly, don’t let looks deceive you! Tussock is a ‘jack of all trades’ ready to put his hand to anything. He travelled the world far and wide for 5 years and his greatest accomplishments were two motorbike adventures, each nearly a year in duration.
The first was from London to Johannesburg roughing it all the way. Sleeping under the stars, following the railway lines and sun and cooking their meals on the billy.
These were true Kiwi’s travelling in the day before laptops, cell phones or back up vehicles and they had a blast! The second was from Arizona to Buenos Aries and I am sure that will not be the last, Mongolia perhaps?
After he returned home to Geraldine, NZ and had nearly given his mother a heart attack by surprising her with his arrival after 5 years, he met up with an old mate and decided to try his hand at guiding a raft on his local river, the Rangitata.
This provided the perfect mix for him; adrenalin, spectacular mountain scenery and of course, mixing with people from all over the world. He had found his niche in life! Check out the action video.
Rangitata Rafts soon gained the reputation as one of the most scenic, exciting and friendly rafting companies in New Zealand and Tussock’s role began to change.
Not forgetting that during this time he also married Alex and became a father of three! Now days, Tussock is more a ‘jack of all trades’ than ever before, as the owner/operator of Rangitata Rafts.
He now leaves the guiding paddle in the capable hands of one of his many fantastic and very professional grade 4/5 guides.
