Whale Watch and Dolphin Encounter
Whale Watch is the ultimate Kaikoura attraction. Join the tour, board the modern catamarans and explore the Kaikoura coastline in search of Sperm Whales. Another great ocean attraction is Dolphin Encounter. The Dolphin Encounter experience gives you one of two options, watch from the boat or get in the water and swim with them. Both tours offer a uniquely Kaikoura activity, whilst being surrounded by stunning scenery.
Free Kaikoura attractions
There are many free attractions in Kaikoura, suitable for all ages.
Seal Colony and Peninsula Walkway
Just a short 5 minute drive from the town centre is the seal colony. It is free to visit and there are often seals lying right next to the car park. From there is a great walk around the Kaikoura Peninsula. Also free, it’s a great way to see the mountain views and stunning limestone cliffs. The whole walk is around 1.5hrs return (2.8km one way), and there are a few look-outs and rest stops where you can turn back if you want to make the walk shorter.
Ohau Waterfall Track
Only 25km North of Kaikoura is the Ohau Waterfall track. There is ample parking on the side of State Highway 1, which leads to the short 5 minute walk to the waterfall. Often seal pups will swim up the stream to the waterfall, which is a great photo opportunity.
Walks and tramps up Mt Fyffe
Looming over Kaikoura is Mt Fyffe, where there are many walks for any level of tramper. For beginners the Hinau Walk is a scenic 45min loop, through the native bush. For the more adventurous, there are tracks up to 3 days, travelling along the ridge to the summit, and down behind Mt Fyffe.
