Ohope Beach: a superb place for a sports team training camp

Ohope Beach makes an ideal base for running, biking, kayaking, water sport and on-field training.

Ohope Beach is in the eastern Bay of Plenty of the North Island. This is a sensational area with an unspoiled natural environment and a low population. It makes a superb training camp area for any sporting code.

Ohope Beach offers sports teams:

Ideal location. You have an 11km long, sweeping beach, with firm sand that is ideal for running. You are beside the Pacific Ocean, with patrolled swimming, and surfing or Stand Up Paddle-boarding at West End.

You're also beside Ohiwa harbour, a beautiful shallow-water harbour that is ideal for safe kayaking, SUP, swimming, yachting, kite surfing and more. You have easy proximity to white water kayaking in Kawerau.

Stunning trails. From Ohope Beach, you are close to sensational trails, such as: Nga Tapuwae o Toi trail to Whakatane; the Pakihi Track and Dunes Trail sections of the Motu Trails; Onekawa Te Mawhai regional park near Opotiki; and Tarawera Falls near Kawerau.

Quiet roads. For road cycling, there are excellent low-traffic routes, both flat and hilly. State Highway 35 is known as one of the world’s great on-road cycle rides. Traffords Hill on SH2 offers a 5km climb. 

On-field facilities. In Whakatane and Opotiki there are excellent playing fields, courts, a grass athletic track, domains and more.

Watersport of all kinds. Surfing, swimming, SUP, K1 and multisport kayaking, waka ama, yachting, kite surfing, rowing, diving.

Friendly people. In such an outdoors focused area, people in the eastern Bay of Plenty love sport. Many Olympic Games and World Championship athletes have come from this area.

Easy access. Ohope Beach is just one-hour's drive from Tauranga and one-hour's drive from Rotorua. Whakatane has an airport, served by Air Chathams flights, including to/from Auckland.

Great climate. Ohope beach is just 6km from Whakatane, which has a sunshine monitor. This confirms that in many years the eastern Bay of Plenty is the sunniest place in the country.

Relaxed. The eastern Bay of Plenty and Eastland are not crowded. There is plenty of capacity. Accommodation is affordable.
