Tekapo Springs has the perfect mix of relaxing and exciting activities, 364 days per year! The complex is located in the Mackenzie Region, halfway between Christchurch and Queenstown. Situated at the base of Mount John, there are unparalleled views of turquoise-blue Lake Tekapo and the golden mountain ranges beyond.
Hot pools & Aqua Play Area
Soak in the lake, mountain and forest views from one of the 3 hot pools, named and shaped after the lakes of the region. Temperatures range from 37 – 39 degrees Celsius and there are fountains and jets to massage away any aches or pains. The crystal-clear water is not geothermal, but comes from an underground source near Tekapo and is exceptionally pure. The hot pools are beautifully landscaped with native alpine plants and trees.
During warmer weather, cool off in the Aqua Play Area with a shallow pool (1 metre deep) that’s perfect for children, and features fun, interactive jets and fountains. A deep pool (2 metres) is just right for swimming a few laps or diving off the side! Temperatures range from 27 – 33 degrees Celsius.

Tekapo Star Gazing
The ultimate in stellar relaxation, Tekapo Star Gazing is the only guided hot pools and star gazing experience in New Zealand. The tour operates from the renowned facilities of Tekapo Springs, combining the stunning Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve with our soul-warming hot pools.
A two-hour experience, the first half of the tour begins with an introduction to the night sky by a star gazing guide, and is complemented by looking through high-powered telescopes pointed at some of the most interesting features of the southern skies. This guided portion of the tour is a unique combination of astronomy and storytelling with a focus on Maori myths and legends.
If the weather isn’t suitable for outdoor stargazing, an alternative indoor tour will be provided. The indoor experience uses a high-definition projector to feature full-colour satellite images of deep space as well as interactive elements and similar fascinating and informative content as the outdoor tour.
The second half of the tour is where it really gets magical! In a 38-degree hot pool, let the real world melt away as you lie back with the help of a floating hammock to ensure ultimate relaxation and easy sky viewing. While soothing music plays, feel like you’re floating among the stars as you explore the wonders of the night skies. Our guides are poolside during this unique star gazing experience, so if any questions come to mind or you’d like to know more about the cosmos you just need to ask.
Tekapo Star Gazing operates 363 nights per year with start times varying by season to ensure the darkest skies.
