St Clair is renowned as one of New Zealand's top surfing beaches, hosting a number of major surfing championships each year including the Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour.
St Clair is a popular wave that can sometimes get crowded. Hazards include sharks/rips and crowds. Most of the surf comes from groundswells and the best swell direction is from the south. Waves at the beach break both left and right the and the right hand point break usually has waves. Best on mid to low tide. Optimal wind direction is from the north or northwest.
St Clair not only offers great offshore breaks but also a brilliant surf scene with an array of local cafes and its very own surf school.
If you're planning to travel to Dunedin, St Clair is a must-see spot. A great place to stay is the Esplanade Motels & Apartments with great beachfront accommodation. The 3 bedroom beach house with its spacious lounge is ideal for groups of surfies ...plus it's got direct access onto the Esplande from the house - ideal when you've got your surf board in tow!
