HEART OF THE WEST COAST
Teeming with natural attractions, the central West Coast has much to offer with relaxing scenic walks, beautiful inland lakes that are popular with fisherman and boating enthusiasts, and several wildlife attractions. The region's bountiful range of raw materials combined with its inspiring surrounds of forest, sea and mountains has produced a vibrant artisan community. Here you can admire the works of master carvers and other craftsmen, pan for alluvial gold, soak up local gold-mining history and get a taste of Hokitika's wild foods experience at The Bushmans Centre.
The icy tongues of the Franz Josef Glacier and the Fox Glacier are the main drawcards for visitors to the southern West Coast region but these are just some of the fabulous sites to see. The scenery here is truly awe-inspiring with lush forests, snow-capped mountains that reflect perfectly in crystal-clear lakes, and rivers such as the Haast, which tumbles prettily over boulders as it carves a path to the sea. This dramatic coastline is home to lots of wildlife, including penguins, seals and dolphins.
