Canterbury is a land of plains and peaks – a mecca for diverse experiences. Hikes & day walks are a great way to experience the very best of the region.

One of the best walks in the region is Hooker Valley Track, popular with both locals and travellers. The track passes through Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, a rugged land of ice and rock, and travels beside the Hooker River. It can be walked in several different ways so can take anywhere from 1.5 to 4 hours to complete.

The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway juts out from the rugged east coast of the region and it’s a must do if you’re nearby in Kaikoura. Experience ocean views and while you're there, chances are you’ll spot some of the varied wildlife including seals – you might even glimpse a friendly whale or dolphin.

In mid-Canterbury, the Rakaia Gorge Walkway passes through glacier and river carved terraces to a panoramic lookout point before passing back through native bush and historic gold mining sites. With its various features, this walk is up there with the best.
