Catlins Bike Tour

The wild south coast of the Catlins is one of the local secrets of Otago. This day tour is perfect for the beginner rider, quiet back-roads, deserted beaches with plenty of wildlife.

We depart Dunedin at 8.30am for a 9.30am arrival in the Catlins. The first impression is the wildness of this forgotten corner of New Zealand. We bike inland and reach a disused railway tunnel It can be ridden through and in the dark it makes for an exciting ride.

After a descent we take a remote gravel road through a farmed valley that comes out at Cannibal Bay. This is a stunning beach perfect for spotting the rare Hooker Sealions.

After lunch on the beach, we return along Cannibal Bay and back over to our starting point. This includes some stunnning coastal views and, for those with extra energy to burn, there is the option of riding out to the lighthouse at Nugget Point.

A classic day biking coastal Otago.
