Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound
Uncover the beauty of Fiordland and explore the area on a day/overnight cruise, scenic flight or kayaking experience. There are various tour operators in both Milford and Doubtful Sound that will take you to explore the glaciers, waterfalls, rainforest, peaks and wildlife.
Travelling to the area is easily accessed by car. Travel time from Queenstown will take around 5 hours to Milford Sound and 2.5 hours from Te Anau. Stopping in Te Anau can be a great way to break up the trip and allow you some time to explore the Glowworm Caves, Lake Te Anau and the walking trails throughout the area.
There are several different walking trails and tracks to explore throughout Fiordland National Park. Three of New Zealand’s Great Walks take you through Fiordland National Park. These walks are classified by the Department of Conservation as the premier walking trails through some of New Zealand’s best scenery.
The Milford Track is a 53.5 km trail that starts in Te Anau and takes you through Fiordland on a four day journey to Milford Sound. There are three huts that you can choose to stay at online the way at the Clinton, Mintaro and Dumpling hut, each featuring 40-bunks, gas cookers, kitchen facilities and running water.
The Kepler Track is a 60 km trail that features limestone bluffs, beech forests, and excellent views of Te Anau Basin and Lake Manapouri over the 3-4 day walk. There are three huts to stay at along the track at the Luxmore, Iris Burn and Moturau huts, each featuring bunks and cooking facilities. You can also choose to camp at the Brod Bay campsite or Iris Burn campsite.
The Routeburn Track will take you through Mt Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks beautiful scenery on a 3 day excursion over 32 km. The track features four huts including the Routeburn Flats, Routeburn Falls, Mackenzie and Howden Huts that all feature bunks and cooking facilities. You can also choose to camp at the Routeburn Flats or Lake Mackenzie campsite.
