They say that 'trout die of old age' at Lake Brunner. Moana is the lake's only settlement; it’s also a train stop for the TranzAlpine.

Situated at the edge of Lake Brunner, Moana is a tiny settlement with a camping ground and a store. The TranzAlpine railway (voted one of the top six train journeys in the world) stops here and guests can board or depart the train.

Fishing is a key attraction, Lake Brunner holds excellent stocks of wild brown trout and is open all year. It can be fished in almost any weather – boats are available for hire. There are several other lakes and more than 40 rivers or streams within an hour’s drive of Moana.

Other activities include swimming, jet boating, water skiing and there are some lovely scenic walks and cycling tracks. Tours can be provided by Explore West Coast. There is a hotel, campground and holiday homes available for those wishing to stay in the area. Check out Lake Brunner Lodge for accommodation by the lake.

Moana is a 30 minute drive to Greymouth the largest town on the West Coast.
