There are so many great places to visit in the South Island that it can be daunting deciding where to go. These are some of my favourite towns and cities that I visited during my time in the South island!
Places to visit in the South Island
The biggest city in the South Island has had a rough time lately, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't visit. The rebuilding is lowly coming to fruition and there are some great things to do such as see Lyttleton Bay and relax in Hagley Park!
A city modelled on the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, Dunedin is an intriguing city, with lots of historical and cultural significance. It is also home to the steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street, which has an average gradient of 35%
This small town on the East Coast is not short of incredible views and great things to do. There is a lot of wildlife to be seen here and a visit to the see the seal pups at Ohau Waterfall Walk is a must. A walk around the coast is also recommended to take in the beauty of Kaikoura!
Nelson is the biggest city in the West Coast, which serves as the gateway to Golden Bay and the Abel Tasman National Park. A beautiful city, that reminded of my hometwon Chester in England, it has a lively nightlife scene, which is definitely worth checking out.
The adrenaline capital of New Zealand is a must visit if you are in the South Island. Besides the adrenaline, Queenstown is picteresque and there are amazing views everywhere you turn. The nightlife here is very lively and make sure you get a Fergburger at the end of the night! You won't regret it!
