Enjoy wildlife encounters, thermal spas, adventure activities and great seafood

For an unforgettable range of experiences make sure you include Hanmer Springs & Kaikoura in your New Zealand holiday itinerary.

Snow capped mountains meet the crashing Pacific Ocean along the dramatic Kaikoura coastline and there is no better backdrop against which to experience the magical sight of whales surfacing or dolphins playing. The Maori word Kaikoura literally means ‘meal of crayfish’ so it’s no surprise that this is an ideal location for lovers of seafood! After a pleasant two hour drive you can be in the alpine woodland resort of Hanmer Springs which offers hiking, and adventure activities such as 4WDing, mountain biking and horse riding. However it is most well known as the place for soaking your cares away in restorative thermal waters or indulging in a spa treatment or two!

If you are staying in Kaikoura on the first Saturday of October then make sure not to miss Seafest!

The festival is a taste, sight & sound extravaganza for those who enjoy good food, good company and a good time. An impressive variety of products is offered, presented in many weird and wonderfully creative ways - all enjoyed with continuous live entertainment, this is Kaikoura's premier festival featuring wine and food from the region, Seafest is an annual celebration of the abundance of the ocean and all it represents for the region.

Did you know?

Maori legend states that the Mythical "Maui" put his right foot on the Kaikoura peninsula, as he hauled up the North Island. 900 years ago, Maori "Moa" hunting parties were the first people to discover this area. As the Maori name for Kaikoura "eating crayfish" indicates, the abundance of food sources in the ocean and forests nearby attracted the Ngai Tahu Maori Tribe to this area.
