What you need to know about trout fishing on Lake Taupo

Important information about trout fishing on Lake Taupo, including rules and regulations.

Lake Taupo, situated in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand, offers excellent trout fishing all year round; there is no closed season on the Lake.

Most fishing takes the form of trolling with either lures or flies. No bait fishing is permitted. You will find that operators use a combination of downriggers, harling and trolling depending on the time of day, weather and time restraints.

Some helpful trout fishing tips and regulations for Lake Taupo:

  • Trout cannot be bought or sold - the only way to try it is to go and catch it.
  • Minimum length to keep your catch is 40cm from tip of nose to V of tail.
  • Undersized fish must be returned to water whether dead or alive.
  • When releasing a trout: Leave the fish in the water if possible and unhook without touching it – use long-nosed pliers to twist the hook free while the fish is still in the water.
  • To measure the fish use a soft knot-less net and lay the fish on this measure while it is still in the net
  • Never squeeze the fish or rip the hook out.
  • Daily bag limit for all water in the Taupo fishing district, except Lake Rotoaira, is 3 trout per day, regardless of species.
  • You may fish only between the hours of 5.00am and 12.00 midnight
  • For all fishing methods you may only fish with one rod per angler at any time. You may have other assembled rods with you.
  • You can use up to 3 flies or lures on your line, but only one hook per lure or fly.
  • The use of bait is not permitted.
  • Every angler must have a valid fishing licence. These are available to purchase from your skipper or guide on the day, or from local petrol stations or sports shops.
