Taheke Waterfall Track

Spectacular 3km track offering views of kauri and the Taheke waterfall.

Time: 2hr return

Distance: 3km loop

This is another lovely waterfall located close to Whangarei. Known less than the Whangarei Falls, Taheke Falls is a beautiful area located approximately 14 kilometres north of Whangarei on the Whareora - Pataua North Road. To get there follow the Whareora - Pataua North Road and turn left on to Hoban Road (it is sign posted off Pataua North Road). Follow the road to the end where you will see a Department of Conservation (DOC) sign and carpark area.

The carpark area is separate from the start of the track as the remainder of the road crosses private land. From the carpark, follow the gravel road for approximately 350 metres to the bridge. Immediately after the bridge on the right you will see the DOC sign for the start of the track. Please note that dogs are not allowed on this track. There are a couple of options you can do once there–the short walk to the waterfall viewing platform or continue on and do the loop walk and up to the kauri

Both tracks start at the same point. The initial section of the track up to the turn off to the waterfall viewing platform is well formed with a slight incline.
It is approximately 250 steps (200m) to the turn off where you will follow this track for a short distance to the waterfall. There is no water access.
If you wish to continue on and do the loop walk, carry on along the main track until you reach the fork in the track to do the loop walk. Note that approximately 140 metres further along the track from the waterfall turn off point, there is a slightly misleading track on the right which looks like it might be the loop walk. Ignore this and carry on until you reach the sign posted loop walk (approximately 300 steps or 250 metres). The remainder of the track is narrower and more uneven than the initial section of the track and can be slippery after rainfall. The track does climb a little to the kauri grove on the ridge and so does require a moderate level of fitness. The total distance from the start of the track and around the loop is approximately 3,750 steps or 3 kilometres.
