Things to do on a rainy day in Queenstown

We're lucky enough to live and work in Queenstown, so when the sun is not shining and the snow is not abundant, we know what to do on a wet and rainy day.

There's plenty to do in Queenstown, no matter what weather you encounter, or what season you arrive in.  Here's a few ideas for you if it happens to be a wet and rainy day.

  • A lake cruise - perhaps aboard the TSS Earnslaw, what we like to call the 'floating museum'
  • Tantalise tasted buds on Wine Tours to Gibbston Valley & Bannockburn
  • Be inspired visiting a gallery or two on The Queenstown Arts Trail
  • White Water Rafting because you're going to get wet anyway!
  • Experience a more mystical view above town after riding Skyline Gondola
  • Get up close and personal with NZ Native Flora & Fauna at the Kiwi & Birdlife Park
  • Recreate scenes from the Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit on a Movie Tours
  • Enjoy an adrenalin rush and go Canyoning (summer only)
  • Horse Trekking - The horses don't mind braving the elements, nor should you
  • sip on your favourite ale from an ice glass at Minus 5 or Below Zero Ice Bar
  • spoil yourself with a massage at our favourite, the Body Sanctum
  • head out of town to Arthurs Point's 10-Pin Bowling
  • create your own necklace and other accessories at the Bead Shop
  • do a Bungy Jump, or watch someone others scream, squeal and freak out from a safer vantage point
  • practice your putting skills at the Indoor Minigolf course
  • watch our diving ducks (the scaup) and feed the lake salmon and trout at the Underwater Observatory
  • take a 4-Wheel-Drive Tour to Skippers Canyon and see why rental cars aren't allowed on this road
  • visit beautiful Arrowtown and get lost in thoughts of what life may have been like in goldrush times
  • soak in the stunning views in a hot tub looking out over the Shotover River at Onsen Hot Pools
  • fly through the trees along flying fox with ZipTrek Eco Tours
  • get muddy while racing your mates on Quad Bikes
  • scare yourself with excitement in the Fear Factory, our very fright-filled haunted house
  • head to Frankton's Alpine Aqualand for a dip in the pools
  • take the challenge of scaling cliffs with Queenstown Climbing
  • sightsee aboard the Double Decker Bus
  • see the latest Hollywood blockbuster at Reading Cinemas in Queenstown, or enjoy the entertainment with a glass of wine at boutique cinema & bar Dorothy Browns in Arrowtown
  • thrillseekers should definitely check out Shotover Canyon Swing
  • sample a high tea at Left Bank Cafe, 5-star surrounds at the Sofitel
  • test out our local Mountain Biking tracks
  • jump in a river and go RiverSurfing, brilliant in any weather
  • immerse yourself in NZ's only XD Dark Ride, an interactive theatre
  • take a leisurely scenic drive in luxury with Freeman X Supercars
  • bar hop, cafe hop, restaurant hop - Queenstown is a bit of a foodie's paradise

Finally, if none of the above tickles your fancy (and we find that would be almost impossible) then there is also one last favourite up our sleeve - fancy a bit of Retail Therapy?  There's plenty of fun shops to keep you busy for hours.
