Tongariro River Trail

The Tongariro River Trail is a leisurely cruise through stunning bush along the banks of the world famous Tongariro River.


The Tongariro River Trail is a 15km loop track that follows the banks of the mighty Tongariro River from the township of Turangi to Red Hut bridge and return. It is an easy and relaxing ride suitable for families and novice riders who want to discover the native bush and clear waters of the river without having to ride too far. There are picnic spots along the way and access to the river for a refreshing swim during the warm summer months.

If you are lucky you might see an angler catch a trout in one of the many fishing spots along the way. The Tongariro River is a world renowned trout fishing river and is visited by anglers from all over the world.

If you ride the full length of the trail, you will come to the Tongariro National Trout Centre. This centre showcases trout in their natural habitat and has a visitor centre where you can learn all about the history of the area and its ecology.
